WHEY PROTEIN SHAKE: DARK CHOCOLATE AND RASPBERRY

Whey Protein

Whey Protein Shake:

Ingredients:

A serving of whey protein powder – either chocolate or natural.

1 cup of milk (or almond/soy/rice milk). I think it tastes best with unsweetened almond milk.

1 heaped cup of frozen raspberries.

2 heaped tbsp of good quality, pure cocoa powder or cacao powder.

10 mint leaves (or more to taste).

1/2 cup of ice.

Optional:

Extra ice or frozen raspberries (gives it a thicker, ice cream like, milk shake consistency).

Extra xylitol or honey to sweeten (particularly if using a natural whey powder).

1 tbsp of cacao nibs.

Method:

Whizz up all the ingredients in a blender and pour.

Whey gourmet. A healthy, chocolate indulgence that feels like a treat rather than a necessity after a good workout. I’m sure I don’t need to convince you of the benefits of whey protein post workout for muscle repair. However, this shake is also great as a snack or meal replacement at anytime to keep hunger and sweet cravings at bay, especially if you are trying to increase protein intake and cut calories to shed body fat. Just use skimmed milk or unsweetened alternative milk and xylitol for extra sweetness (if needed). Depending on your goals you can choose any number of whey protein supplements, I opt for a low carb variety so this shake is perfect after a workout to ensure I get some carbs too (needed for protein absorption). So I heap in the frozen raspberries for a thicker shake and occasionally add a little honey. Of course, you can substitute whey protein for casein, especially if you are enjoying this shake in the evening.

Extra Health Benefits:

Pure cocoa is full of antioxidants and can be beneficial for heart health. Have a read of The Los Angeles Times article: Chemists Discover Secret To Dark Chocolate’s Health Benefits. So it seems you can enjoy the rich chocolate taste of this shake, with the recommended 2 tablespoons of cocoa for heart health, guilt free.

The raspberries provide good carbs post workout, packed with fibre, vitamin c and antioxidants but most importantly, they taste great, particularly with dark chocolate.
