STYLISH MEN’S SWIMWEAR FOR SUMMER 2014

Stylish Men's Swimwear for Summer 2014
Here is Sydney, swim shorts are a wardrobe staple all year round. However, thinking fondly of home (London) and the weather hotting up in the northern hemisphere with summer holidays on the way, it’s probably timely to look at swim shorts. Purchasing a good pair sooner rather than later is great motivation to hit the gym in preparation for fun in the sun.

Ok, so we are talking beach/resort/activewear swim shorts here. Real, hardcore swimmers are forgiven for wearing tight Speedos, jammers and so on, they are never going to be stylish but are totally fit for purpose so, as long as you avoid “tight and white” (unforgivable), then you are excused for your crimes against style. No excuses for the rest of you.

I’m ridiculously lucky to be living by Manly Beach (Surf City) on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Here, most people live in swimwear but it seems, in my opinion, that most men are getting it wrong. Errrr….I’ve observed lots of toned, athletic men, not doing their well earned physiques any favours in long, baggy, elasticated swim shorts. So, I’ve compiled a list of my swimwear do’s and don’ts.

General Swimwear Rules:

  • Avoid “Dad” style elastic waist bands, they won’t do anyone any favours, making flesh (not fat) look like excessive love handles. Go for flat fronted shorts with a flat waist band and a drawstring or side clips instead.
  • Baggy board shorts that go past the knee are never flattering – trust me! They look like pantaloons. Besides men rarely need worry about wobbly, cellulite dimpled thighs so get your legs out. Billowing, long shorts make those carrying a little extra pudge look chunkier and those with wiry frames look seriously ill. For those lucky few who are genetically gifted and/or work super hard for an incredible physique, then show it off. If you’ve got it, flaunt it! So, go for swim shorts that sit above the knee with a tailored fit but not tight.
  • Opt for shorts with a fly, it helps to ease clinginess around the man area when wet.
